This week in class…

We talked about a lot of stuff this week, and well, I guess it was pretty interesting. We watched a movie called Did You Ever Wonder and it talked about how we are polluting our Earth and using it too fast, and how school kids are starting to find school boring as they get older, and they want to learn more about “real-world-situations”. Kids are learning about consuming, which is not a sustainable learning. Many kids are just listening to their teachers talking and probably doing handouts that they don’t learn anything from. The movie said that kids should get involved in what is going on in the world, because our generation is the future. I think that our school has some great opportunities for students to learn about issues in the world, and to open our eyes, but our school is not built very “green” and that is pretty much arguing what Mr. J is trying to do for our school, I think what he is doing is amazing, though! I had Global Issues Class and Roots and Shoots Class with him last semester, and it really opened my eyes to what all this is about and what we can do to help. I think all kids should have the same opportunities as us.
Another thing we did was creating a Google Reader Account where we can subscribe to all the websites we like to visit, or for example our class’ blogs, and then we just sign in on our account and it will say which blogs or websites have something new, so you don’t have to visit every site to check if something new is there, which would take forever.
We also started reading a book called The Wave. It’s mainly about Power, and therefore Mr. R made us do an activity before reading. We had to draw a triangle and place ourselves somewhere in the middle. Then we had to place people and things, who either have more or less power than us, so for example, my maid would go under me and my parents would go over me.

I could not put friends on there because, in my opinion, you don’t have power over your friends, you should be equal, though, sadly sometimes this is not the case, but for me it is. Then Mr. R told us to free-write about this quote “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely”. I think I agree with this quote, because if someone is given complete power they will probably use it to some degree. If men where given complete power in the world, women would probably have a pretty miserable life. Another thing is, if we gave complete power to the government it would be a total disaster. We would have no democracy, no freedom of speech or press, no right, no anything. The government would be in total control of all our actions, like poppetmasters. Well, if you think about it, some governments are already poppetmasters even though they don’t have absolute control. Sellers are the kings of poppetmasters of our time. They tell us when we are cool, what to buy, what to throw away, what to eat, how to live. They absolute corrupted the world.
I would say that everyone have some kind of power, but, everyone also have the power to decide how to use this power. I think that power is also connected to greed. If people have power, they probably live in expensive houses, with swimming pool, drive in expensive cars, wear expensive clothes, control a lot of people and they always what more; therefore greed. People think that they get power from what they own. I would say; NO! The world is not about STUFF, it’s about taking care of those we love, and appriciating what we have.
For this week I would change the “What I learned” to “What I realized”. I think pretty much all of what we talked about in class this week, made me realized that I’m lucky to be in this school where we have the opportinity to open our eyes, and I realized what power actually can do to people.
I only remember what I daydreamed about on Thursday, but I would say, that it’s not that intersting. Well, I daydreamed about watching Friends. I love it, lol (Sorry, couldn’t help it). Then, I thought about going somewhere to take some pictures, and well I accomplished both of those. Check out my pictures.
Again, I didn’t have much to say this week either. I think I learn better with just listening, sorry. I think I’ll try to talk more, but I actually never know what to say.
Oh yeah, one more thing I forgot to mention is some examples of power. You meet power everywhere in your everyday life, like in relationships, school and parents. There’s also the President’s power towards citizens or for example a leader of a group or the boss of a company. I would say that power is not sustainable, we need to equal it out more.

That’s all for this week.

This is an interesting observation, “If men where given complete power in the world, women would probably have a pretty miserable life.” How did men gain so much “power” over women. In which cultures has this shifted? How? Why? How did women take their power back?

Did you know that women do something like 70% of the worlds labor: factories, farming, child raising etc..but only receive a small percentage of the wealth? Why?

You raise some great points, “Sellers are the kings of poppetmasters of our time. They tell us when we are cool, what to buy, what to throw away, what to eat, how to live. They absolute corrupted the world.” But don’t you have the power to choose to not buy or watch?

Great point! People think that they get power from what they own. I would say; NO! The world is not about STUFF, it’s about taking care of those we love, and appriciating what we have.

Don’t worry about not always saying things in class. I am so glad that I can hear your voice here…keep it up. You are doing an amazing job.

I’m actually not sure why or how men gained so much power. I guess it has always been like that because women were the ones to take care of the children and raise them, while the men would be out working or hunting, if we go way back in time. In some cultures, that I know of, the girl’s family have to pay or give a gift to the groom, and I guess it means that the men have more power. Like in Saudi Arabia, women are not allowed to drive, and in many cultures it’s mostly boys and men who get an education. In richer conutries, though, girls usually attend school more than girls in poorer countries or developing countries as you would call it. I’ve actually often wondered why it has to be like this, because women are just as smart as men, so why aren’t they taking up 50% of the schools all over the world? Sometimes I wonder if women would ever get more power?!
I guess you’re right about this:”But don’t you have the power to choose to not buy or watch?” But in many cases people don’t think they have a choice because of society. They want to be as cool or “in” as their friends. I think most people are scared of standing up for themselves, and say “I’m not like everyone else”. Do you think it will ever change?

You said, “think most people are scared of standing up for themselves, and say “I’m not like everyone else”. Do you think it will ever change?”

I think it takes time and awareness of the problems, that goes for the question about gender roles. Often times our cultures force us to carry a lot of baggage, but I think women gaining more power is vital to a better world. So stand up take charge and let’s watch you lead.
